Do I need my phone to print?

Yes, and that's the bonus: your shots land on your phone first (free X half app) so you can share them, then print from the free instax mini Link app. Both are on iPhone and Android.

What film does it use?

Any instax mini film. The kit comes with a 10-shot Macaron pack; refills come in plain white and a rotating set of fun borders.

Can I print the 2-in-1 shots?

Yes. Pair two vertical frames into one picture in the X half app, then print it from the instax mini Link app like any photo.

Is this a good first camera for a kid?

It's a great one for middle schoolers and up: simple controls, small enough for a jacket pocket, and printing makes them slow down and pick their favorite shot.
